Kalief Browder was 16-years-old when he was arrested for an alleged robbery (stealing a backpack) and wrongfully imprisoned without conviction for three years in maximum security prison at Rikers Island. He spent 2 of the 3 years in solitary confinement. Bail was initially set at $3000, and the family did not have it. His false imprisonment story is a case for reform of New York City’s criminal justice system.
