In 2008, the show South Park released an episode which addressed internet celebrity and the ability to make money from Youtube. The episode showed the famous Youtube celebrities of the day, including Tron Guy and Numa Numa, and how internet popularity and cash income didn’t necessarily match up – at least at that time.
My, how things have changed. In the eight years since, Youtube has continued to grow and become far more than a site where you post a funny clip or comment. Advertisers have also adapted, realizing that channels with large numbers of subscribers are prime territory for investment. It’s why you see that often annoying 15 or 30 second ad playing before a video, or have a banner pop up at a certain point during the clip.
