With a history as long as that of the Olympic Games there are sure to be some moments that stick out more than others. Unfortunately, more often than not, those moments are not happy ones.
While there have been great triumphs and world changing decisions made by the organizers and participants of these events, there is also tragedy. Through the course of the years of the modern Olympic Games there has been scandal, political issues and death. Overall there have been roughly twenty-five deaths since 1912, eighteen of which were athletes. These shocking historical events have left their imprints on the Games for better or worse. Now with the 2016 Rio Summer Games fast approaching, let’s keep our fingers crossed that nothing befalls this year’s athletes.
